Horatio, Jhorna and Thordis
Jhorna breathed a sigh of relief as Sunyu asserted that he was well. He smiled as the other boy introduced himself, and adopted a wry grin.
"That's well. I wouldn't want to be responsible for knocking you into one of those," he glanced at the Queen with a shudder, "Anyhow, my name's Jhorna. Pleased to meet you here."
He relaxed his stance as he nodded towards the eggs in general, "It's my first time Standing, but I hope to Impress. Is it your first time too?"
Horatio, trailing fingers over a particularly large egg at the other side, was lost in his own thoughts. Impression had never been in his plans for his life. He had been on track for the Healercraft. He had only come here because his family asked it of him, and Jhorna too of course. Yet, standing here now, devouring the giant egg with his stare and feeling its alien texture beneath his fingers, he was beginning to think of other things. Impression, suddenly, didn't seem like such a bad thing after all. There was so much a dragon could do, so much it could contribute...
He turned, snapping his eyes from the egg, and continued walking. Walking out of the Sands. He had seen enough to familiarize himself with both Sands and eggs; he did not wish to stay longer than needed. He nodded to J'fel and S'gur as he passed them. A second thought stopped him, and he glanced again at the Weyrleader.
"Sir, I've seen the eggs and I'm done with Touching them. May I...leave now?"
Thordis raised his brows as Konamar indicated him to Jansen. He had been seen. He cursed, softly, beneath his breath, and let a small step take him out from the shadow of the egg he stood behind. Wary eyes glanced from Jansen to Konamar and back again. There had been a time once, in the Lower Caverns, when a careless word about Impressions had gained the 12-turn-old Thordis a beating that nearly broke his arms. It was another boy, older and bigger and upset at not Impressing, who had perpetuated that act. The memory was still fresh in his mind. He eyed Konamar, hoping the Caminar boy would say nothing, hoping the man would simply walk away. Konamar would not be fool enough to do anything here, but there was always an after to the Touching. Thordis was not afraid to admit that he was afraid of the oldest candidate here...but no one needed to know that.
Selvagem
Selvagem smiled as Genet addressed her. This plantado girl was not only unabashed at speaking to her, but had managed to catch her name well enough on the first try as well. She frowned slightly, however, as Genet mentioned the Search, and tilted her head aside, regarding her curiously.
"Is it....bad to bring a Caminar here?"
Her voice was soft but audible. Genet however, had already turned and was saying other things. Selvagem listened patiently, and the smile on her features gre in her eyes as well. She nodded softly, her dialect and use of the common language only slightly off.
"I would be happy to seat with you, Genet. On the day itself."
Keldara turned and asked her to take her turn just then, and with a nod of acknowledgement the Caminar girl stepped up to the golden egg. For a long moment she stared down at it, not quite certain what she was to do. Genet and Keldara had touched it, and spoken to it, as had all the other girls. With shy, soft fingers she reached out gingerly and let her skin meet the surface of the golden-tinged shell. A flicker of surprise in her eyes: it was warm. Gently, her full hand found the surface of the egg, and then the other palm rose to join it.
A smile broke out on the slender girl's face, bright and genuine: it was an amazing thing, this egg, a thing of sheer wonder. She dared to think of the dragonet inside, still dreaming the dreams of the unhatched, and pulled her hands away. No one in their right minds touched a sleeping animal, for fear of shocking it into defense. Selvagem lingered, wistful, for a minute longer, wondering if it were indeed possible for a gold dragon to choose a Caminar girl - a child of peoples that most Pernese did not even consider fully human at times.
The moment passed, and she stepped back and away. It was a great dream, but a dream still. She was Caminar, and though her people had Impressed to dragons before, none she could recall had ever ridden a gold. Besides...she grinned, abruptly. What would Rulf think if his master suddenly came for him with a great squalling dragonet beside her? The thought almost shook laughter from her throat. She backed away more, giving Nocia time with the egg, and started back towards Genet and Keldara again.
