Being a spy is fun, being spied on or someone else being a spy is not so much fun. “Maybe he just likes to eat alone? I have an uncle who does, but when he has to eat with others he picks people who might be not much of a bother?” Genet considered this and then shook her head. “No, because if he knew me he’d know that’s not true about me. And he does know you so likely knows that’s not true about you!” The way she said it could hardly be taken as an insult. To Genet being a bother meant you were doing something right somewhere.
The pondering of what J’fel was up to make Genet frown. “He sent a bunch of people off is what he did. And he meant it to be in secret because he did it during the hatching. And I’ve been asking questions. He’s probably afraid I’ll find something out.” Genet let this thought sink into her own brain before she made a face of disgust. “Eww. And that means he might have to try to shut me up. And he knows he can’t seduce me. I better not get sent home!”

Emeni wrinkled her nose at the thought of J'fel's potential seduction attempts, snorting derisively. "Well, remember our deal. Something happens, you tell me, and I'll see what I can do. It's not fair for him to send you home because you were asking questions, I mean, come on. Everybody knows there's riders gone, and if he didn't want people curious, he should have been smarter about it."
She paused a moment, thinking. "But I wonder what it is he thinks you'll find out." From the way she was talking about it, J'fel's nefarious spying plans no longer sounded like a theory, but a certainty. "What d'you know so far? Maybe there's some clue you've got and you don't know it's important yet." That was a good one. Emeni sat back in her chair, pleased with herself for coming up with it.

Genet was thrilled with the repeated offer and smiled bright to show it. “I can’t thank you enough! I mean, you’re so kind. I truly do appreciate it. I’ve felt so alone without my brother. It’s good to know there’s someone who will help me. It makes me feel a lot better.” She felt much better about the whole thing knowing if something bad did happen someone might help her out.
“I don’t know hardly anything. I know G’tet is gone. And…shoot. There’s another greenrider that starts with an S. Also a wingsecond and a wingleader from different wings. Oh! And a Caminar woman. And the wingsecond is Caminar as well. The wingleader might be related to them somehow? It’s all gossip though.” It hardly sounds like a group that screams intrigue. Genet frowns down at the last of her bread as preserves goop off of it onto her plate. “They snuck off during the hatching. Maybe they were not supposed to be gone so long?”

"Caminar, huh? What's he doing sending a Caminar doing his dirty work?"
Folding a hand over her chin, Emeni glanced around the room. She was looking for any telltale dark skins in the area, and indeed there was one - a man with a bluerider's knot - but he didn't seem to be listening. "Wonder if he thinks she might know something about the missing children? That could be what he's got 'em doing, is looking for the kids, but then I don't know why he'd want to be secret about it." She frowned thoughtfully, her eyes still on the Caminar rider sitting near them. Suddenly her gaze snapped back to Genet.
"How many people you figure know about the Caminar being with them? 'Cause the riders are going to get noticed sooner or later, but the Caminar aren't necessarily going to tell anyone one of their own people's missing. I mean, I didn't know. Maybe that's the part he doesn't want you knowing, and if so, that must be the key to the whole thing." She nodded firmly.

“Maybe he figures it they are caught then it’s no loss? I mean, he doesn’t like the Caminar I bet.” Although that would mean…Genet frowned darkly. “If he sent my brother because he thought him expendable I swear I will-“ Perhaps threatening the weyrleader was not a good idea. Genet shut her mouth on further words.
To make sure she said nothing else she took the last of her bread and stuffed it into her mouth. This at least meant Emeni could speak without getting interrupted. Once klah had been sipped Genet nodded slowly. “Maybe? I do not know for sure anyway. I was going to find out though. I just know G’tet was hanging around with one of their women before he left.” Snorting loudly she drummed fingers on the table. “If he really was doing something important why hide it? Do you know how late it is? I’m supposed to get back to the kitchen soon. Pot scrubbing after lunch.”

Emeni's eyebrows shot up and she clapped her hands to her mouth. "Oh, crap, you're right!" she exclaimed, glancing at the entrance to the lower caverns. "I wasn't even thinking of the time, but the Steward will kill me. I'm so late!" She looked around for the group she'd come in with, but sure enough, they were already gone. Back at work. She gritted her teeth, mentally cursing them for not thinking to come get her on the way out - even though, she had to admit, she wouldn't have thought of it either.
Getting up, Emeni paused only to rap her knuckles on the table. "I'll bet that's it, though. J'fel wants to find the missing kids and be a big old hero, and he doesn't want it to look like he needed help from some Caminar woman to pull it off, so he doesn't want you talking about who's gone with the riders. That's totally it!" Sure of herself and her conclusions, Emeni backed away from the table and started trotting back to the store rooms, throwing a wave over her shoulder as she rushed off.

Genet kept her laugh to herself until Emeni was gone. That woman was as bad as her with time. As she gathered up her plates to carry into the kitchen she thought about what she’d learned. Someone was spying on her maybe! That was rather exciting and there was a spring in her steps as she entered the kitchen. Eyeing the sink of pots to scrub she couldn’t stop smiling. Not only did she make a potential new friend, but she learned some new things to think about. Also, she rather liked scrubbing pots. When they were clean it was something to look at with a sense of accomplishment. Most importantly it was an easy job so her mind could wander. She would pay a visit soon to the Caminar. Maybe even confront the weyrleader! It was getting more exciting already for her.
