This time Julio did not let Voronio interrupt him. “You’d do more good to watch your family, Voronio,” he told him. “We’ll gain nothing if brawls continue to break out.” Or too many visits with lower caverns’ women occur but he was not going to mention that. It was not tactful and he could not fault the young men for actions he himself had taken at their age. “I will go if no one else will,” Julio finally said.

Silvio kept his mouth shut about his own part in that brawl. Milo sprang to mind and he fervently agreed. No more brawls. There was silence around the circle and Silvio was starting to feel a little uncomfortable standing up here amongst all these seated folks. His older brother was looking at him like he'd lost his mind. Some of his friends with begrudging respect, others trying not to laugh. No one else volunteered.
"Sir, it's you and me then," Silvio said and moved into the circle, held a hand out to the older man. Favio rose then and clapped his younger son on the shoulder. "Silvio and Julio will speak to the Weyrleaders and we will arrange to clear our names so we can go and find the roads where we belong."

“An honor, son,” Julio said with a grin. He clasped hands with the younger man and winked as he leaned closer to let only Silvio hear his words. “We’ll do well, son. Don’t you worry about this making it harder to find a good wife. When we’re done you’ll be beating the best off with sticks.” Raising his voice he spoke to everyone, “Back on the road. I say we break out a bit to celebrate. Soon enough we’ll be where we belong and all this nonsense behind us!”

Silvio's smile was warm and sincere when Julio first took his hand and he shook back firmly. The murmured remark though froze his smile in place. He'd never really had any problem attracting women in the first place, but the mention of marriage which used to be no big deal, just something to look forward to some day, put ice water in his veins. And yet he kept that smile firmly in place, looked around the circle, unseeing. Made a show of confidence.
"Here's to the open road," he said and he was proud that it came out without the slightest quaver. Now all they had to do was face J'fel again, only this time, with the Weyrwoman too.
