Salina felt like a stone was dropping into her stomach. Ez'ki wasn't really one for gossip. He wanted to be up to date on the whos and the whats, but he didn't like gossip. Much better to stay out of it. And rising--she followed that slight nudge and let him loose--was definitely not a good sign, even more so when he turned to face them.
"Oh?" She kept her tone carefully nonchalant, as if this were just a passing topic she held very little interest in. She couldn't meet his eyes though, knowing he'd be able to see the truth in her own. And wasn't it amazing that she could feel that keen, bitter taste of guilt and still get that little buzz, that trickle of heat, from the cause of such a feeling?
Hand brushed at Z'dayi's in half-hearted protest, skin whispering over skin. She didn't want him to stop, not really. But she had to at least make a show for Ez'ki, as if she weren't inwardly delighted by the bronzer's touch. Shard her.
"What was it then, Ez? Don't tell me you found out about the kitchen girl and the stodgy bluerider. We've known that one for weeks!" Eyes rolled, but that nervousness was there; slight but there, in a tiny tremble of voice. She knew what was coming and judging by the way her bluerider was looking, he was going to go all older brother on her. Again.

Ez’ki stretched out his arms before he continued, “Yeah, yeah I know about Mr. Staunch. He can’t keep things quiet. Big mouth on him, really, really unattractive.” He added critically, then he gave a faux pas laugh, “But no, what I heard was marginally more ridiculous.” He caught the fact that Salina would not look him in the eye, and the mild but present enough hint of pride perhaps that coloured the tone of the bronze rider to be. “One of the kitchen girls, said that she seen you two together and I don’t mean as friends.” He smirked. But that soon faded into a hapless grin, one that silently prayed that it was false, that everything he seen before him was falsified. That she and he were not… Yes, both were ranking fledgelings, but surely they couldn’t. Not them no. Well admittedly Z’dayi was better than K’mar (not that Deoneth would permit Volsteath).
“But you two know I’m not one for gossip, but this rumour’s starting to get pretty rife. I just thought it might be best if you two were made aware of this situation.” Ez’ki shrugged as though it meant nothing to him – though it did. It meant a great deal to him. He was far too protective of Salina. Even with regard to Z’dayi. Despite the fact the male was taller, broader, stronger than he, He would not think twice about getting angry.

Z'dayi wouldn't think twice about giving him reason to get angry, either. "We haven't f--" He paused, glanced sidelong at the goldrider, stretched a smile, and qualified, "--done anything people oughta be talking about." The quality of yet entertained his voice. Yet yet yet. Maybe Salina didn't want word getting out, but his reputation wasn't likely to suffer for it, so what did he care who knew? Besides...
He pulled on a few of the goldrider's toes a few extra times before he wrapped his fingers around her feet and slid them back across the cot and into her keeping once more. Then, his hands back to himself, he laced them almost primly and turned to look squarely at Ez'ki with an utterly unapologetic grin brightening his expression. "Is it some kinda problem? 'Cause sooner or later they're gonna cut us loose, and then-- well." Speak now or forever hold your peace.

Shards. She'd been right. Ez'ki was just as astute as she'd always known him to be. But why now? And why did he have to adopt the older brother look? He knew Z'dayi, was even friends with him! Perhaps that made it worse? Salina was scrambling for answers to her questions and so missed her oppurtunity for a reply, instead abdicating the need to Z'dayi.
She caught what the bronzer was saying, face bland with indifference as he smiled at her, eyebrows arched high as he hastily amended what he'd been going to say. She caught the hanging word of his sentence like a fly in a web. Yet. How true it was.
"Honestly, Ez, there's been nothing going on of that sort. Deoneth and Tremaith would have let everyone know. You know that." She faced the accusations with logic, face still smooth. But she and the Zee looked like two kids caught red-handed in the act. "But I'm not going to say it's not going to happen. It's okay, all right?"
She tucked her feet beneath her, relieved that Z'dayi had made his point. The disappointment, slight but there, hovered at the edges of her emotional field. She liked that pleasant little buzz that accompanied his touch. A nod followed the end of the bronzerider's words, her expression innocent as she looked at Ez'ki, sitting up straight.
"I'm not going to promise you nothing's going to happen, because it's not. And really, Ez, it's been going on for...a while. You need to learn to trust us. We're not some dimglows. We know what we're doing."
