This had to be the most awkward conversation she'd ever had with anyone. Ever. Salina was feeling absolutely mortified that she had pursued it. It wasn't as if she and Z'dayi were set in stone. They were anything but. He wanted to run after all the pretty skirts and she...well, Salina wasn't quite sure what she wanted.
"Maybe," she answered doubtfully, choosing not to be offended by his easily riled remark. Could she help if she were the same? "You might be right but...would you call that naught?" She wasn't talking about J'fel now or anything close to it. She was talking about their little game. "Sure, it wasn't exactly what we might have wished for, but it certainly wasn't nothing." Cat smile spread, the manuscript flopping to her lap. "Wouldn't you agree?"

Yeah, talking about love-lives wasn't exactly part-and-parcel of the niche he'd carved for Salina in his life, but Z'dayi couldn't just cut and run without coming across like a heartless jerk. And coming across like a heartless jerk may well harm his chances of bringing all this making-out to fruition down the line. Fortunately, she spared him from any further talk of the goldrider and the Weyrleader, and left him chuckling instead. "Fair 'nough. It wasn't nothing. But."
He had managed, by now, to make himself sloppily presentable. Somewhere, some girl would surely like the thrown-together look of him, the sense that he hadn't bothered to put the polish on himself, the charm that came solely with laziness. And he knew it, rolled up his sleeves carelessly while he laughed quietly back at Salina's cat-smile. All else being equal, there was still a childlike quality to her that he probably wouldn't get past till the deed was done, and he was occasionally reminded of it when she did things like that-- looked coy and pretty while she sat in bed reading and prompted him to remark things like, "Guys like me, darling, are only after one thing. And it ain't just really-good-kisses."
Honesty. To his credit.

Thank Faranth, the man knew when to move on! Relief encompassing her entire body, Salina was glad to be away of the topic of her love life. Yes, she and Z'dayi were just fooling around. But she did get a slight prick of jealousy that he was going to go hunt up his qeue. Well, she couldn't blame herself once again as she looked over his hastily put together appearance. It made her think of things she wouldn't be able to do for months yet. Things that Z'dayi himself and J'fel-still? what had happened with him? he'd just disappeared!-had claims upon.
"Mmmm. That would be a problem there. After all, you have to stop and smell the roses sometimes. And really-good-kissing, and even really fabulous kissing, is definitely rose-smelling in my opinion. It's the little things, Zee."

"For some people," Z'dayi began with an edge to his tone, one that fringed on apology. He knew how his lifestyle looked from the outside, how he seemed, how easy it would be for someone in Salina's position to look down her nose at his open skirt-chasing. But he offered no possibility that he would change any time soon. "For some people, it's rose-smelling."
He ran his hands over his hair and, on his way back toward the bowl, he made a point of swinging wide to bring him back toward the goldrider's cot. "For me? It's just paving the way, darlin'. Tell me how it ends," while he bends low toward her forehead, his lips to brush her hairline. How-it-ends might mean her story, might mean this thing between them.

Head tilted slightly to the side, eyes drawing over the bronzerider's face. She hadn't been insulting him at all, only pointing out her point of view of things. She liked that final step just as much as he did, but she loved the in-between.
Like him kissing at her forehead. That was rose-smelling, and some of the very best kind. She smiled, eyes closing for a moment to bask in the feeling. "I'll tell you when I get there," she murmured. Then she reached up, a hand touching at his cheek. "How bout you gimme a real kiss, champ? Just so you know what will be waiting for you at the front of your line." The grin stretched across her face as she laughed lightly.

"Didn't we just..." Z'dayi trailed off, his eyes squinted and cast upward, only halfway straightened from recently resting his lips against the goldrider's forehead. He pressed a hand alongside hers, flattened her palm along the plane of his cheek and chin, chuckled roughly into the heel of her hand where his kiss turned next. "Didn't we just finish with the 'real kiss,' darlin'?"
Not that he needed to be told twice. But he wasn't going to sit back down and get all comfortable and stupid again, this time just bracing the weight of his torso on the hand that he pressed flat into the sheets next to Salina's hips. His other hand came away from hers and he tilted a finger under her chin. "I already got an idea what'll be waiting for me." He kissed her anyway.

A small laugh, head tilting back so eyes could meet eyes as the humor flashed across her features, lighting them with an inner pleasure. "Mmm. But you know you want to." Lips tilted upwards, her hand pressed under his, tingling from the added warmth and weight.
She sighed as lips met, her chin following his prompting. She was still smiling as mouths met and intertwined. Just something he'd remember when he was out looking for all his other girls.

Undoubtedly, Z'dayi would remember. He'd remember leaning and leaning, remember his hand going from her chin to the back of her head, his fingers catching up a tangle of her hair. Then unraveling abruptly, his head pulled back with a quick breath, his index finger pressed across Salina's lips while he shook his head in amused denial of going-any-further. He wanted to; kissing her hard was proof enough of that; but it came down to a head-shake and a half-smile down at her sitting prettily amid her reading and her pillows.
Straightening up, he strolled away from the side of her bed, hands finding their way into his pockets while he sauntered from the barracks. He was going to need a long line of ladies to work off eight months of celibacy.

He could think he needed woman after woman to sate his hunger. The goldrider knew differently. She knew that to do as he wanted would take a man with a much longer stamina than any could possibly possess to achieve. She just knew that the first few weeks could possibly be very, very heady.
Salina leaned back along her cot, watching Z'dayi exit. She could still feel his lips on hers, the feel of his fingers caught in her hair. That warm little rumble was in her belly, making her feel all secret and happy. She picked at the manuscript, thumbing through it idly. They'd just have to remember and be very careful until the golden day of their release arrived.
