Months 2 & 3
As the dragons grow, they tend to eat and sleep less often. They are still feeding daily, although maybe only twice, and greater amounts. They also still nap, but again, for shorter periods of time. During these two months their personalities have time to shine, as well as their curiosity. They are sure to have plenty of questions for their riders, although they are generally compliant and focused on pleasing their lifemate. Into the third month, riders will need to practice restraint within their bonds as their dragons become unruly, firmly telling them ‘no’, but quick to assure with love. Although the dragons are growing more independent in the fact that they will no longer be reminded to chew and things like that, they still need attention from their riders when awake.
The second month with be focused mostly on formation, with lessons and drills that teach and reinforce proper technique. The third month is dedicated to hand-to-hand combat. Long hair can be a disadvantage when sparring, and the weyrlings will be encouraged to cut their hair. Those who wait to get their haircut until it is absolutely required must expect to get it pulled quite a bit, because one of the main lessons of sparring is to take advantage of every aspect of a situation. Other important lessons will also be taught, sometimes by guest teachers who specialize in that area. Lessons and chores are still completed while the dragons are sleeping, with basic care and exercise taking up the time while they are awake. The weyrling pairs are still being told to focus on strengthening their bond, as well as practicing restraint.
Lessons: Introduction to Formation, Weyr Rank, Structure, and Etiquette, Introduction to Endurance Testing
Weeks One, Two, & Three – Lessons and Formation Training
Weyrlings will be introduced to formation and begin to practice ground drills, marching in carefully rehearsed groups around the bowl. These formations will eventually be aerial, but for now they take place on the ground. Lessons will focus on the inner structure of riders that make up the weyr’s ranks, and will be guest-taught by the Weyrleader himself.
Week Four – First Week of Endurance Testing
The riders will be introduced to the endurance testing schedule, which will fill the last week of every month. These tests are designed to force the weyrlings to show what they’ve learned, as well as show the weyrlingmaster what needs to be improved upon.
Lessons: Introduction to Unarmed Combat, Weather & Flight, Geography & Flight
Weeks One, Two, & Three – Lessons and Combat Training
Weyrlings will be introduced to unarmed combat and begin to practice hand-to-hand, sparring with each other and being taught grappling and disarming techniques. Haircuts are encouraged. Lessons will focus on different flight scenarios as well as the effects of weather and geography on flight.
Week Four – Second Week of Endurance Testing
The riders will participate in endurance tests, which are designed to force the weyrlings to show what they’ve learned, as well as show the weyrlingmaster what needs to be improved upon.
Dragons are still not to be left unattended when awake. They’re not quite old enough to be comfortable by themselves, and require the constant attention and reassurance of their rider. Within the next month, this restriction will be altered slightly, but for now the dragons are still too young to be unattended.
Sexual relationships are also still not allowed, but remember that IC actions have IC consequences. If you’d like to sneak behind I’dalyn’s back and fool around, your weyrling dragon must exhibit the correct reaction. They become uncertain and skittish, oftentimes violent, because they do not understand their rider’s dependence on someone other than themselves.
As the training becomes more physically focused, the riders need to sleep more often. By the time the sun goes down, weyrlings should be in the barracks. If you choose to sneak out, remember that you have to be up quite early the next day, and respond appropriately. Not too many people can spend the night out and about and be ready for drills the next morning.
