Name: S'yu [Formally Sunyu (Soon-you)]
Gender: Male
Age: 18
Rank: Candidate
Tall, slender, with fair blond hair and bright blue eyes are the exact opposite of Sun Yew. He has to look up at many, not because of unusually short legs but because of genes; he’s just genetically small, standing at a height of 5’5”. Slender isn’t exactly the best word to describe his figure; more like a medium weight, mostly muscle however, for all the time he spends being active. His arms are a tad bit longer than his legs, an oddity, but it’s not noticeable enough or dire enough to hinder his movement. His skin is tanned by the sun, a few shades darker than his normal skin color, a pale hue.
His hair is long, for he doesn’t see the need to cut it regularly, brushing against his back where his shoulder blades rest. His hair is honey blond, tangled at times because of his antics outside. His rounded almond-shaped eyes are a striking gold-brown, as if his eyes were glazed over with a golden sheen. Nothing particularly striking about his face, nothing to stand out, with a normally shaped nose, thin lips a pale pink color.
Though his appearance is certainly different than most eighteen year olds, his personality is probably much beyond that. Six words to describe him would include childish, temper-full, fair, proud, active and slightly egotistical, in that order. Childish is the first thing one may notice about Sun; his gold-brown eyes always have a sparkle of mischievousness, an energy-bound child grown up. Though not necessarily a prankster, he doesn’t have a total grasp on politeness, nor does he have one on rank; he believes nobody is certainly above him, though whether a person is below him or not depends on his attitude. He jokes around a lot, plays silly games, and normally cannot keep a straight face in tough situations unless dire; like thread, for instance.
There is one thing that bothers him: impression. He has a good chance of impressing, and he really doesn’t care what color he gets; he just wishes to help with thread. That really is the only reason why he came to Telgar weyr, other than to fully understand the weyr folk and their ways. What bothers him is his half-sister, Keldara. As custom is, she is standing for just the gold egg; There will be plenty of other girls there; her chance of impressing is slim. He doesn’t want her to feel left out if he impresses and she does; but he also didn’t want her to be at the weyr by herself. And he knows that she is very independent, and though the Weyrwoman is the most powerful position a woman can get, he realizes that Keldara doesn’t really want power, like that anyways. She just wants to help and be respected and not pushed around. And dragonriders…aren’t that nice in that aspect. She’ll be kept on a tight leash. That plagues his thoughts often.
His pride and temper mold together, as well as his ego. He is proud of who he is, and sometimes he can get a little carried away about his actual importance on Pern. While he deems others equal to or below him when he meets them, for he is a definitely outgoing and social person, he can sometimes believe that they’re doing something utterly wrong and thinks that his way is right and only his way. A temper that kindles for anything as simple as stupidity, slowness, or unfairness is his. His temper is one that shows itself often, though not for jokes; he knows humor like he knows his own hand. Now, as for his fairness…he’s actually pretty fair. He never, ever takes advantage of people, always gives them a chance to explain themselves, and doesn’t judge people by appearance. Because if he did…he might as well call himself a monkey. That’s what he resembles mostly.
A lonely child from two parents in one of the holds of Telgar is where Sunyu hails from. His mother, Li, was a normal, roundabout kitchen drudge. Though she certainly had much respect there, she had no real rank other than that. His father, Crey, was the Hold Harper. His parents were married; Li loved Crey, but Crey wasn’t so bound to her. She didn’t realize it until Sunyu came across his half-sister, Keldara, and told her. He found that he had two other Half-brothers, both of which loved Crey to death because they took up harpering and treated them well. Since Sunyu had never really been into music, but rather had been forced into it by both parents, Crey had been rather blunt and not-to-nice to Sun. But now that he had two other sons who appreciated his work, he didn’t bother making Sun do what he did and instead focused on the other two.
His half-sister, however, was a whole different story. She was the older of the three of them (her and her two brothers), so she was just under a year younger than Sunyu. When the two had first met, he’d seen a bit of him in her; though she certainly didn’t hate the harpers, she didn’t want to be one herself. A Harper’s daughter was normally expected to be able to sing and/or play. She couldn’t. Well, she could, but it wasn’t super-duper spectacular. It was so-so. Hence her not liking to do it. But also unlike her half-brother, she didn’t speak out against her hatred for Crey; she was quiet about it. They met when a random person called at, "How are you, Crey's girl?" Thinking he was referring to him, and calling him a girl, Sunyu went to remark when he ran smack dab into someone; Keldara. She apologized so many times that he laughed until asking him about the reference. She admitted to it, he did to, and bam! They were close. As her relationship with Sunyu strengthened, and they got closer, however, that changed. She began to snap at her father and not bother going to Harper classes. Not that she was a rebel, she just didn’t like it. Finally Crey got the message and allowed her to stop. But now, she had no idea of what she wanted to do when she got older.
Well, together they made an interesting pairing in the hold, for they soon created some havoc, however minor. They loved to toy with the others, though Sun did most of the work; Keldara had more respect for the others than Sunyu ever did. The one thing they ever got into an argument about was the Dragonriders and the weyr; Keldara respected them, while Sun just shrugged in their direction. He’d never met them, why would he give them that much respect? Not that he didn’t appreciate what they’d done in the past; but he had no idea of how they thought of hold folk. He was very cautious around them, and Keldara knew it. But they normally dodged the subject; until the searchrider came their way.
It was a very random day for the blue and his rider to show up. Though they had heard of the clutch, they hadn't expected a visit to their hold so soon. The line-up was conducted, and Keldara had to drag Sunyu to go. He was reluctant, very reluctant, though Keldara didn’t know why; he was afraid that he would be called up and she wouldn’t, or vice versa. They were very close, after all. Not to mention that Keldara would be up for gold only, while he would be up for bronze, brown, blue and green. If he impressed and she didn’t…he’d feel horrible. And her chances were slim. Keldara was asked first, and she accepted; she really felt like she could make a living in weyr life, even if she didn’t impress and just helped out. That made Sun reluctantly accept as well, though the rider didn’t seem to notice it. He hid it well. He never told Keldara about his doubts, however.
It’s been two weeks since then. He and Keldara’s siblings have progressed along in the Harper Hall. Li divorced Crey finally, and Crey turned around and married Keldara’s mother. The story of the family is known in the hold but nobody speaks of it out of politeness; though Crey sometimes is given looks because of it. Doesn’t seem to phase him much, however, or his sons either for that matter. They’re both happy at what they’re doing and how their family turned out.
Dragon's Name: Wujinth
Color: Brown
Physical Description:
Dark for a brown, this thin and whippy dragon's head, neckridges and spine are scattered with freckles of charcoal, soot and clay as though he's been out beneath the falling embers from threadfighting days of old. Slim wings have a wide span reached by arching, delicate spars near black in hue; the sails suspended from their structure are smoky umber with sparks of ruddy flame to brighten them. His chest and throat glow the quickened amber of new fire, the same hue as the glossy, wicked talons that tip slightly oversized, long-toed paws.
Personality:
The standard brown: Calm, staid, dependable, devoted. Wujinth is none of the above. So intense as to be called high-strung or just 'excitable,' he isn't without dedication to a cause - but so many causes appeal, and so many things seem to be important, he's forever changing his mind and shifting his attention. He's fickle, too; his rider dasn't rely on his support, and if his rider can't assume this beast will be always on his side, trust that wingmates and leaders better not assume it, either. His temper's worst of all: quick to light and, once lit, it burns with a devouring and fiery thirst that consumes his whole being and threatens to do the same for any who defy him. His rages, if not controlled, are as bad as any bronze's or queen's and destined to become legendary.
Mindvoice
Crackling and full of sparks when he's excited, hissing like a burning fuse when his anger threatens, Wujinth's mental touch is rarely without hard and percussive aspects. His moments of repose and relaxation are rare and even then his 'voice' is accompanied by a scent of smoke, heady and oppressive. (Color 866033)
Inspiration
Gunpowder, also called black powder, was probably first discovered in the 9th century by Chinese alchemists searching for an elixir of immortality. It was used for incendiary projectiles as early as 904 and in fire lances, precursors to the gun, in the mid-10th century. The earliest known depiction of a gun is a sculpture from a cave in Sichuan dating to the 1100s; the oldest gun ever discovered dates to 1288.
Gunpowder appeared in the Islamic world in the 13th century, though there may be evidence of its earlier presence in the late 12th century. It appeared in Europe in the 13th century. It is believed that both regions learned of gunpowder from contact with Mongols or the Chinese.
Wujinth takes his name from the Wujing Zongyao, a Chinese military compendium written in 1044 AD and the first known text to describe formulas for black powder.
