Name: H’gar
Gender: Male
Age: 63
Rank: Weyrlingmaster
Dragon: Brown Baristath
Wing: Weyrling
Physical Description
H’gar, unlike plenty of men his age, boasts a full head of hair gone a stately grey. It’s worn a little longer than many other dragonriders partly due to the curls that are completely unruly if cut too short. H’gar may have been thinner when younger, but he’s put on more than a little weight at his age. While not fat he’s politely considered stocky. He may be over sixty turns, but his eyes are still a clear blue in color and his mouth as warm and expressive as a man half his age. There’s a genial air about him that goes well with the smile that’s almost always seen on his face. His clothes are standard rider fare in warm reds and browns. He only dresses up for special occasions and even then he’s understated in appearance.
Background
H’gar was born Horgaren at Telgar Weyr to a bronzerider and a cook. The pair did not have a formal relationship, but spent more of their time together than not. H’gar was fifteen when he stood for the first time and he impressed to brown Baristath. The first impression of the clutch he thought it a good omen for his new life. He excelled in his new place at the Weyr, a thoroughly likable fellow who never met a person he couldn’t befriend.
It’s said he had several wings trying to lure him in, but when asked he just shrugs it off. Modest and unwilling to risk jealousy he just says he was tapped like any other brownrider. At twenty-two he was sent out on his first search. He was excited to do so and determined that he and Baristath would search only the best candidates. At Telgar Hold he found Ramla and was smitten right away. He might have asked her to come back not just because Baristath was interested, but also because he wanted to be able to spend more time with her.
When Ramla did not impress he made his move and was surprised that she accepted. Over the turns the pair spent as much time together as not. Although he wanted her to move in with him she denied. It didn’t matter that he had a reputation as a lady’s man. Whatever else went on with either of them his heart belonged to one woman only. Enjoying the company of others he has a card game in his weyr at least once a week. Terrible at card games he never has a short table. That he loses marks doesn’t matter. He likes the company, the wine, the fun. And often if Ramla is not interested he finds someone else to console him over his loss.
H’gar is unbothered by the Caminar although he doesn’t argue with the headwoman over it. Instead he just lets her vent and agrees with her quietly until he can change the subject. Easy going, laid back, never a bother H’gar may be getting older, but he’s not ready to retire yet. The new weyrleader is expected to make mistakes because they all do. He supports him the same way he supported S'lyn. His respect is to the office.
And his respect was rewarded when after the former weyrlingmaster died H'gar was approached by the young J'fel to take over the post. He had no way of knowing that Ramla had gone to see J'fel when he firs took his post and asked him to be considered. Even if he did know he would not mind. That was her looking out for him. He took to his new position well. He enjoys teaching the weyrlings, even the troublemakers, and although having a couple of girls impressed to green dragons is somewhat odd to him he just sees it as progress. Progress is good.
Dragon Info: Baristath is 48 turns old and as spry as any younger than him. He will tell anyone this who tries to tell him he is too old. A romeo him and H'gar are well known at green flights and they win more than they lose. The younger dragons might be faster, but he's got turns of wily skills on his side. Baristath is a people person, as much as one can be when one cannot speak but to one person. He would rather lounge in the sun and speak across the bowl than be up to any activities. Unless there is a flight in progress. To the young dragons he tries to come off as a kindly old uncle. Who will slap your tail if you get out of line.
