There was something to be said for holing yourself up for a few days. After her failure to Impress, Yashi couldn’t help but fall in on herself, thoughts of her failure constantly occupying her mind. What had she done wrong? What could she have done differently? Then, of course, it had hit the young woman- nothing. Her dragon was simply waiting for her, still waiting in shell somewhere, or existing in the vast potential that was the future. Now Yashi couldn’t help but look back at disgust on herself as of only a few days ago. How could she have fallen to such a state? It wasn’t like her at all. True, her drive to perfection… No, no more thoughts about that nonsense anymore.
Apparently, while in her self-imposed exile, Yashi had missed quite a lot. It had only taken a few hours of working alertly for her to catch up on all that had occurred. The Caminar? Trouble? Well, at least she wouldn’t be useless in these tense times. Even a Healer who had beginner’s skill (such as herself) would surely be needed.
Today, Yashi leapt out of bed almost violently, probably waking up other Candidates in the process. Well, it was past time they were up anyway. Yashi operated firmly on the ‘early to bed, early to rise’ principle. You got more accomplished that way. In fact, Yashi liked to spend as little time sleeping as possible, stifling her yawns as she plowed on forward in her determined way. The girl could be like a modern Terran bulldozer, and woe to you if you stood in her way.
Once dressed, hair pulled back in a utilitarian bun, Yashi presented herself at the Infirmary, ready for work. Today probably wouldn’t have much going on, but Yashi was determined to make the most of it. In her mind, she equated hard work with proving her worth to a dragon. Logically, she knew the two weren’t really related at all, but if she could somehow prove her worth (mostly to herself), then perhaps when she did Impress… Ah, it was all so confusing! Memories, unbidden, rose in Yashi’s mind.
New and confused at the Weyr, having just arrived in the nick of time, she stumbled on the hot sand, feeling it burn through the thin robe and flimsy sandals actually permitted for a Hatching. Wonder filled her, and excitement, and a tiny pit of nervous-ness that she was determined to quell. Eggs cracked, and it seemed like the Impressions were happening all too fast, and then, suddenly, they were over. There was nothing, no one, left on the sands for her, and the feeling of desolation was complete. But now Yashi would rise again, phoenix-like, from the fire of her own unhappiness, more determined than ever, and it all went one day at a time.
