Months 5 & 6
Independence comes for the dragons as it does any child. Weyrlings will find themselves dealing with a growing dragon with the mindset of a child. They want to be grown up and be of help. There is more of a push to be like the big dragons and they will get underfoot in the process. Expect to find your dragonets speaking more to other dragons now too. Questions you cannot or will not answer will be posed towards those who are older and wiser. Often times they will ask more than once since their memories are what they are.
With the growing up come milestones to celebrate. The big one is that weyrling dragons are going to be allowed to start hunting. The first hunt is bound to be an exciting one and the smaller dragons will find themselves having to wait until month six while the larger ones will be learning this skill in month five. The other exciting event is that in month six all dragonets will be going up for their first solo flight. They’re still not big enough for their riders to come along in the air, but they’ll get to share the feeling with their landbound lifemates.
Wing formations, wing formations, and more wing formations! H’gar will be bringing in the wingleader or wingsecond from each wing to discuss what it is they do. Including their activities in the dragon games. It’s unofficially a chance for those same wingleaders to get a feel for those that will be graduating in half a turn.
Unarmed combat continues to be taught although H’gar does not force all the weyrlings to continue past the basics. He encourages it, of course, but so long as they learn their basic sparring and self-defense he will not force anyone to become an expert knife fighter.
Etiquette and history are required daily classes as the dragonets are old enough to not distract their riders from these more boring lessons. That is the theory anyway.
Chores, other than butchering, continue as in the past. The barracks is expected to remain clean as are the weyrlings and their dragons. Shabby looking weyrlings are typically excused for the day to spend it in the laundry learning how one maintains clothes properly.
As for new chores there is one that is seen by few as a real chore. At the end of the fourth month H’gar brought out a mess of hide and began to instruct his charges in the making of their first set of straps. They would be nothing like what the older riders used this first set, but part of every evening is expected to be given over to working on this most important piece of a dragonrider’s equipment.
With increased strength and stamina on behalf of the young dragons, weyrling pairs are free to roam the Weyr during their free time. This is even encouraged by H’gar as a way for weyrlings to meet those who might be their wingmates someday.
Restrictions on sexual relations remain in effect although young dragons are not so young that they are liable to wake up the whole weyr should their rider stray a little bit. Stray too far and the whole of the weyrling barracks is still likely to hear about it though and punishment will be swift.
Weyrlings are increasingly expected to behave with the maturity and poise that Pern imagines its dragonriders to possess-- which means, among other things, that drunkenness and brawling remain forbidden, while insolence and insubordination are increasingly strictly punished.
In a rather hypocritical move H’gar has forbidden the weyrlings to get involved in organized games of chance.
If you’re having trouble coming up with the thread to start involving weyrlinghood the following suggestions are humbly offered. Please note these are not required and not everyone has to join in. It’s just easier sometimes to pull something up and run with it than get an idea everyone can agree on!
Also please feel free to PM Invisible if you want a one on one or small group scene with H’gar. H’gar is here to guide the weyrlings, but not to dominate their every move. At least OOCly.
A. Evening strap creating. Try to trade for a different piece of hide or if you don’t like someone try to mess their straps up. Give that cute boy or girl a hand and make a new friend! Complain about how they don’t seem to be coming out just perfectly.
B. Baby’s first flight. Marching up to this time there could be nerves, concerns, having to hold one’s dragon back from trying it when they are too young (and suffering consequences for it). Seek out an older rider to calm nerves or get told horror stories.
C. Spend free time meeting new people. Spy on the Caminar. Start thinking of what you might like in your weyr and try to call dibs on choice pieces of furniture. Be in the wrong place at the wrong time!
D. Find an older rider (weyrlingstaff or not) who will supervise your dragon’s first hunting effort.
E. Have a scene where your dragonet pesters an older dragon with questions. And embarrassment that can result when the wrong question is answered!
F. Chores and lessons! Hey, not fun, but always fodder if someone is willing to take a fall for the team for amusement’s sake!
