Months 7 & 8
What to expect
At half their adult size the young dragons are now mostly large enough to support their rider. The young dragons will begin to socialize more with the older dragons although it is a good idea to keep tabs on what is going on. At their age they can still be exposed to things that might cause undue anxiety or stress so you must be ready to intervene. Feedings continue to happen twice a day as they dragons continue to put on muscle during this time.
It's no longer necessary for weyrlings to spend so much of their time outside lessons together. Lessons and drills are scheduled regularly as are times for the dragonets to feed so weyrlings are allowed now to take their meals during posted times as separately as they want so long as they do not skip them. Weyrlings who seem to be regularly skipping meals will be escorted to the infirmary so whatever is obviously wrong might be tended to.
H'gar will begin to push all the weyrlings harder at this time. They have had time to adjust to their new place and while he continues to be easy going those who flaunt the rules or continue to cause troubles will be stomped on hard. Those on bronze (or gold) will be expected to begin to act as future leaders should. They'll be pushed twice as hard as the others and come down on harder than anyone else for the slightest infraction.
Lessons and Chores
Oh, what a fun time it is to be a weyrling! By now the dragonets have all had a chance to take to the skies alone under the watchful eye of the weyrling staff. Mounted drills have begun in the bowl with even the smallest dragons getting to carry their riders this way although for shorter times than their bigger siblings. To prepare for the coming months when drills take to the skies all weyrlings are being pushed harder physically. Exercise sessions, including those fun laps around the bowl, now happen twice daily. First thing in the morning and before dinner are given over to jogging and other physical exertions. The exception to this is Salina who is excused from the evening work-out. Life is so unfair.
At the end of month 8 the larger dragons will be allowed to take their riders with them into the air. No weyrling may fly without supervision at this time. Any that try will find themselves in very hot water indeed. All weyrlings are expected to have their first set of straps well done and many are working on a second set to accommodate growing dragons. Any weyrling who does not have an acceptable set will be allowed to watch the other weyrlings drill while finishing.
Month 8 also sees a change in the classroom situation. While lessons now focus more on drills and the day to day business of being a rider there are some who can look forward to more classroom time as opposed to less like most of the group. Salina, the bronzeriders, and K'mar will be pulled out during free time for the others to begin their Politics classes. At the same time Anayeli and Genet will be sent to spend that time with Eideen who will supposedly help them adjust to being part of the small group of girls on green.
Restrictions
The restriction on gambling continues to be in place.
By now many of the dragons do not need supervision to hunt for themselves. It is still a good idea for their rider to keep watch on them while they eat however as they will still eat themselves sick at this age.
Blues and greens are forbidden to take their riders into the air. They are also not allowed to carry their riders on foot unless it is during supervised drills. The other dragons are not allowed to take their riders into the air unless supervised by weyrling staff, but may carry them aback on foot.
And the one you've all been waiting for. Dragons are now, for the most part, old enough by month 8 to put up with sexual activity on the part of their riders. Some of the less mature ones may still be bothered by it, but it's an individual dragon thing with that one. Such activities in the barracks will result in harsh punishment. After all there's going to be at least one other dragon or weyrling in there with you at all times. Sexual activity between weyrlings and full riders is frowned upon and any full rider taking up with a weyrling can expect as lengthy a lecture from H'gar as the weyrling will get. (No matter the rank on this one, J'fel!)
RP Ideas
A. Upset about some of the weyrlings getting preferential treatment? Sit around and complain with your buddies! Is it fair Salina is excused from some of the exercises? Or that brownrider K'mar gets to sit in on politics lessons when the other brownriders do not?
B. Did your dragon eat too much because you got distracted by that cute person across the bowl? Did your dragon just have too much trouble in the feeding pens?
C. Speaking of unfair - fight back and engage in some illicit gambling just to show that H'gar who is boss!
D. Chores, lessons, drills and the daily drudgery of weyrling life!
E. Time for that first flight. Get together with your weyrlingstaff and start a thread where you get to rush into the air for the first time. (Now's a great time for anyone wanting a little injury for themselves or their dragon to act on it. Those first take-offs and landings are real doozies!)
