The eleventh month closed on a Telgar Weyr much changed, though few truly understood the depth and distance of the most significant changes.
On the fifteenth, part of the group of riders and Caminar sent to investigate the kidnappings returned with one missing child alive and well. So the holders, the crafters, and the Weyr blabbermouths say, anyway, for that's what they've been told and shown: a pretty fifteen-turn-old with brown hair and freckles, S'gur's little sister Rosé who'd been missing now for almost a turn's time.
After tearfully joyous reunions at the Hold, Rosé was taken by rider escort to Harper Hall to be debriefed about her experience. J'fel assigned two of his most trusted men to take the girl and wait for her to be ready to go home, but they returned without her - apparently Rosé, despite her ordeal, took up willingly the offer to become an apprentice at the Hall.
She was no relation to the woman of nearly twenty with the thick sailor's accent who started work in the kitchens the same day that Rosé was presented to her family at Telgar Hold, though playful and earthy Rosie could certainly pass as sweet Rosé's sister or auntie.
Also on the fifteenth, Telgar Weyr grew richer by a riding pair. The Igenite M'sella and his brown Josteth, who returned with the group that found Rosé, joined drills and exercises in the weyrleader's wing that same sevenday. He also apparently met with a number of other dragonriders, mostly men from Blizzard and therefore his wingmates, who in turn left the Weyr on the twentieth.
Again, the official word was that the pairs had gone to investigate the missing children. This time, that word was announced to holds and halls by messenger, and to the Weyr itself by its wingleaders (who were informed by J'fel himself) and its lower caverns staff (informed in turn by headwoman Ramla). Though only the messages to the highest-ranking officials - Lords, craftmasters and the like - contained information about where the riders were going to recover the missing children, rumors began to fly quite quickly that they had been found in parts quite far from Telgar, places the Caminar could never have taken them. With the gossip thus confirming the official statement, few doubted the purpose of this expedition, and the Caminar's names were - in most eyes, if not in all - collectively cleared.
However, when the riders returned on the last day of the eleventh month, blinking into a snow-filled sky above Telgar Weyr, they brought with them no more kidnapping victims. It was also noted at this time that there was still no sign of the return of the rest of the first party that went to search for missing children. When J'fel's wingsecond S'danna was promoted to wingleader of Storm, it was widely assumed that the pairs that had gone would never return - even though the Weyr's dragons had never felt them pass between.
Soon after a tasteful announcement was posted in the Weyr's living cavern. The Wingleaders Th'ane and B'nek and Frost greenrider S'gur (Rosé's brother) were to be honored for their dedication and service to Pern at a memorial on the tenth day of the twelfth month, at the dinner hour. Their wingmates and friends were welcome to come pay their respects or merely drink a toast to the departed.
With preparations for this event underway, the Caminar caravans are packing up in ones and twos, preparing for the long haul down the road out of the Weyr and out of the mountains. Having been here so long, it's of little surprise to anyone that a very few number of the traderfolk seem to be choosing to remain behind as residents of Telgar Weyr.
OOC: Memorial thread will go up in a couple of RL days. Questions? Just PM. ;)
